Final Piece - Urban Juxtaposition Exhibition Poster Outcome Evaluation

These are my trail exhibition posters here i tried out different ways i could layout the final design. I attempted using a black text box to outline my writing however i found it is a distraction to my image and created an eyesore as a lot of my image is taken up by the box covering it up.

This is my final piece, i decided to go with out the black boxes as i think it looks better without.
At the beginning of the assignment we were asked to take pictures in rule of thirds, urban juxtaposition, typefaces and finally we analyzed exhibition posters to practice for different techniques for the final image. The most difficult thing i had to do was create 10 different urban juxtaposition pictures. the problems i encountered were how to create an urban juxtaposition image, i solved this issue by creating my own juxtaposed images.
Throughout all the trial and errors i worked out which typefaces worked best for my poster. I decided overall that script would suit my final image best. I decided I would use script as my type face as it is best suited for my poster as the theme is about advertising an exhibition. The typeface script is modern and engaging however not to formal/informal.
chose this image for my final piece because I think it shows urban juxtaposition clearly. I think this because there is the national history museum, London, in the background. The building has an attractive look because it has line where the windows are and many different tones all over such as the bright/warm colours of the merry-go-round furthermore the building is strong and majestic, it boldly shows dark, low key tones and shadow which exaggerate on the buildings authority.
Rule of thirds isn't clearly shown in my poster however you could say that it is because the merry-go-round is on the second horizontal line.
Through out the whole project have have developed many skills such as learning how to work "illustrator". I also learnt skills such as different photography techniques and methods to make my work more attractive and appealing to the viewer.

My final piece - thumbnails

For my final piece I had to create a urban juxtaposition exhibition poster.

I began by thumb nailing all my possible ideas, I also annotated them with typefaces, colour, rules ect, this can be seen in the images below.

Exhibition Posters

Exhibition Posters

This exhibition poster uses the rule of thirds in the centre of the image as the cat is in the centre and this draws your eye to it, there are light and dark contrasts and there are also typefaces such as sans serif whivh is used in 'painting now' you can tell its sans serif by the way the writing is bold, curved and casual.
This image is showing a beach scenario, the image is mainly black and white however there are hints of colour which attract the viewer. I wouldn't call this a urban environment but I think the image is slightly juxtaposed because the person walking across appears to be dressed smartly which makes the image seem more important. The text used for this poster is Sans Serif you can see this because the writing is curved/ rounded and bold, this makes it seem casual.
This poster has the rule of thirds incorporated within because the main focus point would be on the first diagonal line and in the middle of the horizontal lines. Not only is it rule of thirds but there is also a main focus point where the rest of the poster is grey/black but one part is blue and instantly draws the eye.
This exhibition poster shows the urban environment, it's monochrome which makes the poster have a saddened feeling especially because there is a person sat on their own on the street corner. The poster displays line in places such as the three steps, the tiles and the railings. The poster also displays the rule of thirds; the person is in the middle of the two metaphorical horizontal lines but also on the third diagonal line.

In this exhabition poster there is a typfaces of sans serif, you can see this because its all in capitals and in bold creating a dramayic feel. The image is also taken in the urban environment, displaying huge sky scrapers behind the woman. there is definate tone varitions and also line is shown throughout beacuse of the windows on the building, the squares on the womans unberella and finally line where the bildings rise creating a sense of depth in the picture.

Typography

Typography

SERIF - In typography, a serif is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol.

SANS SERIF - In typography typeface is one that does not have the small projecting features called "serifs" at the end of strokes.

SCRIPT - Script typefaces are based upon the varied and often fluid stroke created by handwriting. They are organised into highly regular formal types similar to cursive writing and looser, more casual scripts.

DISPLAY - Type larger than body type, used in headings, advertisements, etc.

8 of my own:

Serif; You can tell this image is serif because of the exgerrated flicks on the end of the letters. This gives the images a classy feel.

Serif; This image too is Serif, this is shown how on each letter there are curls and fancy style writting.
Sans Serif; This image is in Sans Serif, you can tell because it is slightly bold and a lot more of a casual style of writting.
Sans Serif; This is in the style of Sans Serif you can tell because the style of writing is bold and curvy, but also with strong lines creating light and dark contrasts.
Display; This writing is in the style of Display, you can see this because the writing is catchy.
Display; This image writting is in the style of Display, the writing is bold.

Script; This image is script you can tell because the writting is very elaborate and curly.

Script; This writing too is in the style of Script.

Urban Juxtaposition

Urban Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition happens when there are two or more elements in a scene that either contrasts with each other, or one element contributes towards the other to create an overall theme.
The main purpose of urban juxtaposition is to capture the viewer in the image and make them wonder why the following is happening as its unusual and not in place.

Three off the internet;

Image result for urban juxtaposition This image shows urban juxtaposition because in the photo there is a bride and groom in, the bride in pure white and the groom in a clean fresh suit however the background behind them is a dirty old shop on the side of a road with a corrugated roof and the sign for the shop has been spray painted on.
I think this image displays urban juxtaposition wonderfully and it really captures the attention of the viewer. There are also bold colour contrasts and levels of status shown.

Image result for urban juxtaposition
Image result for urban juxtapositionThis image has displayed urban juxtaposition suttlely but very well as there are two buildings that are normal detached houses but they are in the middle of an industrial estate, which you can see behind them. this makes a good urban juxtaposition image because the hoses are somewhere you wouldn't normally imagine them to be, this causes the viewer to wonder why someone would want there house there. Even though the image is dull it still has a big impact and creates good viewing.

This image has strong urban juxtaposition as the photo is of a little wooden building, which has an old fashioned corner shop feel to it. This little building is placed in between two sets of modern high rise flats. This makes the viewer wonder whether the little building was there first or whether it was placed there after. The little building is quirky and has good contrasts of dark and light browns, furthermore the textures of the buildings being brick and wood.

My own images;

I think this image shows urban juxtaposition because this image was taken in the middle of Manchester in Albert Square. This shows urban juxtaposition because you wouldn't expect to see a church tower in the middle of a busy urban environment.
I think the contrasts are very effective in this image because the buildings are a very dark brown colour whereas the sky is a dark misty grey.

I think this image shows urban juxtaposition because its in the middle of a busy town center however there has been grass and trees put down creating a green area in a place that would normally be a concrete jungle.
I think this image is far too dark therefore does not capture the true essence of the photo. The contrasts are to dark so the leaves blend into the dark surrounding background.
One thing i do like about the image is that you can see the light pollution in the background from the buildings which makes urban juxtaposition clear.
Here shows some form of urban juxtaposition; its modern architecture but surrounded by greenery. The contrasts in this image are bold and create a pleasing image to the eye.

I think this image shows urban juxtaposition because i took this picture in Auschwitz and in some way i think it develops urban juxtaposition because its modern technology in the middle of a country field.
I really like the contrasts and juxtaposition in this image and i think it creates good imagery.

This image shows urban juxtaposition because there is a teddy dog placed within an urban environment, naturally this is juxtaposed because if you saw something like that lying around you would think that's not right someone must have dropped it.
I think this juxtaposed image was successful as it has clear contrasts and displayed the urban environment in the background.
This image shows urban juxtaposition because it is showing a sun lounger outside a building that is within a urban environment this creates a juxaposed image because normally you would see sun loungers on the beach in the sun rather than outside a huge brick building.

Urban juxtaposition is displayed here because there is a plant pot fully of plants where you would normally imagine to see a lamppost. This naturally catches the eye of the viewer and creates an urban juxtaposition.

This image is juxtaposed as my model is wearing shorts whilst walking through the snow. This shows juxtaposition because during this type of weather normally people would wear warm full coverage clothing. This image as strong contrasts throughout such as the red wall against the white snow, the dark roads also compared to the snow. My image could also be considered to have the rule of thirds involved as my model would be on the second vertical line with the first horizontal line going through.

Here urban juxtaposition is shown where there is the history museum in the background and in front a little merry-go-round. Normally a merry-go-round would be located at places such as a funfair or carnival t

Urban juxtaposition is shown here as there is a man stood on the pier, he has a stick blowing bubble. This is urban juxtaposition as you can see all the architecture behind the man however what he is doing is considered unusual for the setting.

Rule Of Thirds.

Rule Of Thirds

The rule of thirds means mentally dividing up your images into two vertical lines and two horizontal lines. You then position the main feature of the scene on one of the lines or points where they meet. Often you have to move around to find the best composition to take a photo by doing this it encourages you to think carefully about whether or not the rule of thirds is being used correctly.

The rule of thirds is a useful technique within photography because it makes an image look more natural and pleasing to the eye.

This image uses the rule of thirds as the main focus point is the street crossing, more specifically the yellow and blue road sign. This is using the rule of thirds by having a main focus point that catches the eye. It is located right in the centre of the image and naturally this draws your eye.
I don't like this image because i feel like there is too much back ground and even though the main focus point is clear

This second image is using the rule of thirds by having its main focus point on the first vertical line and the second horizontal line. The image draws attention easily because the background of the image is negative space and does not distract the eye.
I like this image because its simple but very effective and clearly shows the use of the rule of thirds.

This image uses the rule of thirds by having its main focus point on the second vertical line but in between the two horizontal lines. this is eye catching and shows the skills of the rule of thirds.
I like this image; it is striking however i don't like how dark and contrasting the image is.

Some of my own:

I think this image displays the urban environment and the rule of thirds because if you divided the picture up with four lines the phone box would be to the left side and is the main focus point of the picture.

I think this image shows the rule of thirds because the lamppost is to the right however there are two lampposts in the image and a bit of distracting background therefore the rule of thirds is not completely clear.

I think this image shows the rule of thirds in a un obvious way because the signpost is towards the right of the image however it is not your main focus point as there is distraction within the picture.

This image shows the rule of thirds because the "no smoking" sign is at the top of the image and the rest of the image is a normal brick background so the sign is a clear focus point.
The rule of thirds isn't shown here clearly because the image is cropped and even though the door would be the main focus point and is to the left, if you drew lines over it it would not makes a specific rule of thirds.

The rule of thirds is shown here as the tree trunk is central therefore being the main focus point, furthermore the tree trunk would be inbetween the two vertical lines and through the centre of three horizontal lines. This image is not only rule of thirds but it also has a strong depth of field and colour contrasts.

Here displays the rule of thirds however not to strongly; the drain pipe is on the left hand side and the rest of background is mostly just brick.

Rule of thirds is featured here in two ways. The first way being the main focus point which is the London eye. It is strongly prominent to the left just before the first vertical line. The second way is because you can see the Big Ben in the background  of the image this is also rule of third as it would be in the first vertical line and the first horizontal line. There are strong contrasts throughout which make this image attractive to the viewer

This image has the rule of thirds displayed as the main focal point is the giraffe. This is right in the centre between the two vertical lines.

Here the rule of thirds is shown as the buildings are all lined across the first horizontal line, this image also has a strong depth of field and colour contrasts. The main focus point are the buildings.
